Crew update
10th January 2007
With Avatar now moving ahead with increasing speed we thought
we’d give you a quick recap of who’s doing what under the command
of Mr Cameron...

• Produced by Cameron’s previous partners Jon Landau (Titanic, Solaris), Rae Sanchini (True Lies, Titanic) and co-producer Josh McLaglen, Cameron’s First Assistant Director on Titanic and again on Avatar.

• Production designers are Rick Carter (Jurassic Park, AI, War of the Worlds) and Martin Laing (Titanic, Ghosts of the Abyss).

• Terry Notary is Avatar’s Choreographer or movement coach. He is responsible for the way the new life forms will move and has worked on the Silver Surfer for this years Fantastic Four sequel, as well as Brandon Routh for Superman Returns. This is an important job since the movie has many new life forms most of which are played by actors for use with performance capture technology.

• Vince Pace is Second Unit Director of Photography having previously worked with Cameron on all of his documentary work and also being co-responsible (along with Cameron) for the Fusion Digital 3D camera system that will be used throughout the production of Avatar.

• The great Stan Winston is also helping out with creature designs, no surprise given their history together and that he is in fact a damn genius.
Lightstorm Entertainment, Cameron’s production company will be producing the film after much success with T2, True Lies, Strange Days, Titanic and Solaris. Their website say’s a beacon is going to be unveiled soon, so we’ll keep you posted as to what that is exactly.
Weta Digital’s Joe Letteri
James Cameron has confirmed that Peter Jackson’s company Weta Digital will be providing the visual effects, creatures and digital environments for Avatar. Academy Award winning senior visual effects supervisor Joe Letteri will over see the huge task of creating the photorealistic 3D effects demanded by Cameron for the Avatar’s mix of live action and CG.
“Avatar tells a new kind of story in a world we've never seen before," says Joe. "It demands a whole new set of film-making techniques. Jim is known for that kind of originality, and we're excited to be doing this film with him.” The 2010 Visual Effects Oscar has already been reserved.

It’s official, Cameron has his leading man, Australian actor Sam Worthington. Previously seen in last years version of Macbeth, Worthington is a well respected actor in Australia (he’s great in Dirty Deeds with Bryan Brown) and will next be seen battling a giant crocodile in Greg McLeans ‘Rogue’ after which he will join Cameron on set in August.
He will play the character of Jake Sully opposite Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sully’s love interest. Zoe’s higher profile projects include Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, The Terminal and a couple of episodes of Law and Order. Further announcements are due anytime with some more well known names expected. Stay tuned.
