James Francis Cameron was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, on August 16, 1954. He moved to the USA in 1971. The son of an engineer, he majored in physics at California State University but, after graduating, drove a truck to support his screen-writing ambition. He landed his first professional film job as art director, miniature-set builder, and process-projection supervisor on Roger Corman's Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) and debuted as a director with Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981) the following year.
In 1984, he wrote and directed The Terminator (1984), a futuristic action-thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, and Linda Hamilton. It was a huge success. After this came a string of successful science-fiction action films such as Aliens (1986) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991). After the release of Titanic, Cameron became the most sort after director in Hollywood, and Titanic went to on to become the highest grossing film of all time. A title it holds today by over 500 million dollars.
Cameron used his new found riches and spare time to become more actively involved with various exploration projects. He guest edited an issue of Wired magazine, he sat on the NASA advisory council and was involved with stereoscopic camera systems for satellites.
Cameron also went on to make two IMAX 3D documentaries, one revisiting the Titanic so he could explore the wreck more closely than during the filming of Titanic, and the other documentary about kemosysthesis and the need for space exploration. He also explored
the Bismarck and produced a recent Discovery Channel documentary “The Exodus Decoded”.
Now Cameron is getting back into the directors chair after spending the last two years further developing the Fusion Digital 3D Camera system along side Vince Pace.
Cameron has announced that he is currently working on four projects, Avatar due 2009, Battle Angel due around 2011, The Dive and Sanctum, the last to are possible Producing only projects with the latter being directed by Gary Johnstone.
